OBERDAN: the area |
Our house is located in Viareggio, a world-famous seaside resort, the hearth of Versilia. Enjoy its long sandy beaches, its parks by the sea, the seaside "passeggiata" ( promenade) with wonderful fashion district, its restaurants, coffee shops, entertainements...Two different kind of beaches exist in Viareggio: one is along the promenade, with bathing establishments, swimming pools, wellness centers, restaurants, and so on; one is totally natural, with dunes and mediterrenean vegetation (and free) and can be reached throughout a huge park.
It is possible to rent bykes for the day at the entrance of the park: riding a byke is the best way to go round in Viareggio.
The Oberdan house is ideally located to access both beaches. The marina is nearby as well, with its fabulous yachts and intersting shipyards.
--what makes Oberdan exceptional is its proximity to an incredible
variety of interesting places , like Versilia (forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta), the historic towns of Lucca (13 km) and Pisa (20
km), not to speak of Florence, that is just 75 km ahead
through the highway.

Lucca and Pisa are both worth at least a one-day trip
From the house you can take the Viale dei Tigli, a 3 kms long alley lined with beautiful old trees, and get to the lake Massaciuccoli.
This is a very intersting damp area. It is even possible to visit
the canals linking the lake to the sea by boat trip ( Departure:
in Torre del Lago or in Viareggio).
This is also the area where Puccini's memories are more
hunting. Here the composer wrote so many of his immortal melodies.
Today his Villa is a visitable Museum, very fondly looked
after by Puccini's grand-daughter , Simonetta, who often meets
the visitors-guests.
In July/August, a Puccini Festival takes place in Torre
del Lago. The huge open-air theatre hosts performances of Puccini's
operas, in front of the incomparable scenary offered by the lake
itself.
